The Earth Science Regents is typically administered at the completion of a New York State Regents level high school course in Earth Science. The examination is based on the Earth Science Core Curriculum which is based on Standards 1, 2, 4, 6, and 7 of the New York State Learning Standards for Mathematics, Science, and Technology.

Your school and science program will determine when exactly you should take the Earth Science Regents exam. The test is administered January, June and August of each school year.

How is the Earth Science Regents set up?

THE LABORATORY PERFORMANCE TEST
Since laboratory experience are an essential part of a science course, a portion of the Physical Setting/Earth Science Regents Examination is devoted to assessing laboratory skills. Tasks have been identified from laboratory experiments that you will have performed during the school year. These tasks, which represent skills that are expected to have mastered, change only slightly, if at all, from year to year.
The performance portion of the examination is administered separately from the written portion, normally two weeks earlier. Arrangements for administering the performance exam are made at each school in accordance with guidelines set by the New York State Education Department.
The scoring for each task is based upon accuracy. Values within a certain range are granted the full 2 points allotted to each task. Values within a slightly larger, less precise range earn 1 point. It is possible to accumulate a maximum of 10 points on the performance on the examination.
Additional information regarding the performance test, including an indication of the six tasks to be completed, will be provided by your teacher when this portion of the examination is given. The following is an outline of the six tasks that have been included in past examinations. The time allowed for completing the tasks at each station is 6 minutes.

THE WRITTEN TEST
The written portion of the Earth Science Regents represents 90 points of the total score and has three parts. You should be prepared to answer questions in multiple-choice, constructed response and extended constructed-response formats. Questions will be content and skill based and may require you to graph data, complete a data table, label or draw diagrams, design experiments, make calculations, or write short or extended responses. In addition, you may be required to hypothesize, to interpret, analyze or evaluate data, or to apply scientific knowledge and skills to real world situations.

Part A –Multiple-Choice
A multiple-choice question offers several answers from which you choose the one that best answers the question or completes the statement. Part A of the exam focuses on earth science content and represents 30-40 percent of the examination.

Part B1 –Multiple-Choice
This section of Part B consists of multiple-choice questions as described in Part A. The combined sections of Part B (multiple-choice plus constructed-response) represent 25-35 percent of the examination.

Part B2 –Constructed-Response
In a constructed-response question there is no list of choices from which to choose an answer; rather you are required to provide the answer. Constructed-response questions test skills ranging from constructing graphs or topographical maps to formulating hypotheses, evaluating experimental designs, and drawing conclusions based upon data. The combined sections of Part B represent 25-35 percent of the examination.

Part C –Extended Constructed-Response
These are constructed-response questions that require more time (15-20 minutes per item) and effort on your part to answer. These questions require you to apply your earth science knowledge and skills to real-world problems and applications. Part C represents 15-25 percent of the examination.

Station 1 .. Identification
Using a mineral identification kit and key, the student will determine the characteristics of two mineral samples and identify each sample by name.

Station 2 .. Classification
Using rock identification charts, the student will classify two rock samples as igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic and state the reason for each classification, in one or more complete sentences.

Station 3 .. Angular Measurement
Using a plastic hemisphere that models the apparrent path of the Sun, an external protractor, a ruler, and masking tape, the studetn will locate the position of the Sun at a given time and measure the distance between that position and a fixed point.

Station 4 .. Mass–Density
Using a single-pan, triple-beam decigram balance, a minerl density chart, and a calculator, the student will find the density, determine the mass, and calculate the volume of a given mineral sample.

Station 5 .. Setting Time
Using a column of fluid, three sizes of plastic particles of the same density, a stopwatch , and a calculator, the student will determine the average settling time for each of the three sizes of particles.

Station 6 .. Graphing
Using data obtained from Station 5, the student will construct a line graph of average settling time versus particle diameter and will determine the settling time for another given particle diameter.

3. Rocks and Minerals
4. Weathering, Erosion, Deposition, and Landforms
5. Earthquakes and Plate Tectonics
6. Earth History
7. Meteorology and Climate
8. Astronomy

Gaining an education in wireless communications can be done by enrolling in an accredited school or college. Students who have the desire to train for a career in the field of communication can do so at a variety of levels. Students have a number of options to choose from when preparing for a career in wireless communications. Wireless communications schools offer degree possibilities at three levels of study including an associate’s, bachelors, and masters level.

1. Associate Degree

By gaining an education at an associates degree level of training students can prepare for a variety of careers. Accredited associate degree programs can take up to two years for completion. The type of career desired and school or college of enrollment will help to decide the required coursework. Areas of study may consist of:

3. Master Degree

There are a variety of accredited educational training programs that offer the opportunity to earn a masters degree in wireless communications. Students can complete their training with an additional two years of study. Coursework will focus on subjects like:

Computer Science

From epic era itself education has been important part of our lives. With changing lifestyle and development mode of education has change a lot but its importance is still as same as earlier. Its base on which our future is built. In real sense education makes people human. With changing world its mode has change to and now what is new trend of education is distance education. Distance education learning gives you opportunity of learning with freedom. Distance education is system that has fulfilled the dreams of many who could not achieve their learning goals and still continuing its efforts for same. Distance course not only give you freedom of study but also much more than that.

There are many advantages of distance education. Distance education degrees have helped varied people to develop a dynamic personality in order to get hike in their career and future prospects. With these distance learning education degrees one can engage himself in multiple activities. Students who are not able to attend their regular classes can move their education path with distance learning degree programs. The education methods save money as well as time, as it averts the need for traveling. A person may perform the study at any time that feels to be comfortable, with the help of distance education. Businesspersons and working population need to perform a lot of traveling that makes it impossible for them to attend regular classes. The best option for them is the choice of distant learning program that may help them to easily achieve a degree without leaving their job. The only thing that is required to study is a place where there is internet access or books of particular subjects. Business Degrees

Accounting: This profession has covered a long distance from the time when accounting meant little more than bookkeeping. Today’s smart and technically savvy accountants are part of strategic groups making important business decisions. They are the custodians of a company’s financial well-being.

A Bachelor degree in accounting leads to four major career paths – public accounting, management accounting, government accounting, and internal auditing. All four career paths offer challenging work and an opportunity to learn how a business works.

40% of today’s women and underrepresented minority chemists and chemical engineers in the United States say they were discouraged from pursuing a STEM career (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) at some point in their lives, according to the study (Bayer, 2010).

Those surveyed said that this happened to them mostly while they were in college, and the person most likely to discourage them is their instructor. Really? I found this study very interesting because I experienced this while I was an undergraduate student pursuing my computer science degree.

The incident occurred when I approached my advisor about my plans to double major in computer science and business. I needed his advice on adding the business major and to plan my route to register for the courses to reach my goal. I was already majoring in computer science and I wanted to add business administration and get credited for 2 degrees.

I was met with opposition from my advisor. He told me that he did not think I had what it took to complete a degree in computer science, let alone be successful at any attempt to double-major. My first thought was Wow! You can tell all of that about me from letter grades on a piece of paper?

My second thought was where is the encouragement? He suggested that I change my major to one less challenging than computer science and to forget about the idea of double majoring completely. I think not. I politely told him that I appreciate his feedback but I would expect him to help me file the needed paperwork to be registered as a double major and if he could direct me to an appropriate advisor in the business major.

I graduated in 1986 with a double major in computer science and business administration. I have enjoyed a very successful career in computer science and business. I must admit that I was somewhat surprised to learn that this still happens? Is this about the school I chose?

Was it personal for my advisor? Did my advisor think he was doing a good thing by giving me this advice? I do not know what the answer is, but what I do know is that it was not helpful to me. While I am studying the dearth of African American males in computing it is interesting to discover the myriad of social practices that lead to this situation.

How many young men have experienced this discouragement and decided to change majors to one less challenging? Do not fall victim to this type of discouragement. Be strong and move forward toward your goals. If your advisor or instructor is discouraging you find a new one. Find one that is positive and encouraging and who will work with you to encourage your success.
